EU to Pass Online Gambling Law
After the US, the EU is now looking into regulating online gambling
Next week will a hearing will be held in this sense
The online gambling legalization and regulation has been one of the most heated arguments in the world, especially this year. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the entirety of 2011, you would know that in April of this year, the online gambling world has been shaken to its core by the major US investigation that drove PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker out of the market (with Full Tilt being completely shut down for the summer just one month later), and UB completely out of the business. From online poker sites to online bingo sites, the situation in this industry became harder in the US.
Since the online poker law troubles started, the lawmakers from multiple countries started to show interest in creating a proper regulation for online poker games, online casinos, bookmakers and other such online gambling sites. After the US has taken major steps toward regulating the industry, it now comes down to the European Union to step up and make laws that regulate online gambling.
There have been many calls for creating a harmonized online gambling regulation that spanned across the European Union. Despite the fact that some officials have criticized these calls (among these officials John Penrose, the minister of tourism and heritage of the UK, sticks out the most, as he highly opposed such laws),it seems like talks in this direction will continue.
The European Parliament will vote in the upcoming week in favor of a Europe-wide online gambling regulation. A draft was made by Juergen Creutzmann, and it beckons for the entire European Union to address online gambling laws and concerns in a unified manner.
The report received the support of many of the Parliament’s members, including the industry committee, when it was presented last month. Its author, Creutzmann, has declared that, while the report is an appeal for the countries to get together under this important purpose, it does not want to impose on the laws in the member countries.
With laws in the US now being taken seriously into consideration, and the European Union trying its best to provide the EU members with a solid online gambling regulation, it seems more and more likely that this hobby will have a much easier life in the upcoming months. We can only look forward to the first actual law being passed and going into effect.
